Nomination & Selection Process
Nominations will only be accepted using the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation online nomination form on this website. Currently we are accepting nominations for the 2023 Herb Kohl Fellowship through October 11, 2022 at 5:00:00 p.m. Central Time.
To be eligible to compete for a 2023 Herb Kohl Fellowship, teachers must be nominated by students, parents, other teachers, community members, or administrators. Because the program's purpose is to recognize the contributions of Wisconsin classroom teachers, staff members whose assignments are administrative or supervisory are not eligible. All PreK-12 classroom teachers who plan to continue teaching in their current capacity for a minimum of 50% full time equivalency during the 2023-2024 school year are eligible. Pre-school teachers must teach in a Pre-K program that is affiliated with an elementary school. Previous fellowship recipients are ineligible, however previous fellowship nominees who did not receive a fellowship may re-apply if nominated.
Once nominated, a teacher will receive email notification of his or her nomination. The deadline for candidates who have been nominated for the 2022 Fellowship to submit a completed application is Tuesday, November 16, 2021 at 5:00:00 p.m. Central Time.

Regional committees, which will include parents, teachers, administrators, civic and business leaders, and local newspaper people, will review applications. Regional committees will forward finalist applicants to a statewide selection committee by Monday, January 17, 2022.
Representatives of the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation, Cooperative Education Service Agencies, Wisconsin Newspaper Association, Wisconsin private schools, and state education-related associations serve on the State Selection Committee. The committee will choose 2022 fellowship recipients in late January or early February 2022, and applicants will be notified of their selection in March 2022.
