2010 HERB KOHL EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
APPLICATION PROCESS AND SELECTION OF FINALISTS FROM
RELIGIOUS AND INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS

Who Is Eligible

Applicants must be graduating from a religious/independent high school and intend to enroll in a postsecondary institution, which may be a public or private university, college or vocational/technical college. Applicants must be residents of the State of Wisconsin, U.S.A., in good standing, and demonstrate probable success in postsecondary education.

Selection Criteria

Students will be evaluated on their leadership, citizenship, school and community involvement, and academic achievement. In addition, students will be evaluated on their ability to clearly articulate goals in each of four areas: future educational goals, personal life goals, community/society service goals, and career goals. This is a competitive scholarship. See How Your Application Will Be Scored for details.

Application Process

Excellence Scholarship application forms will be provided to schools in late September. Schools should make applications available to all interested students. Completed applications must be received by the central office for the diocese/jurisdiction with whom the student's school is affiliated, no later than December 1, 2009.

Selection of Finalists

Each diocese/jurisdiction is permitted to submit a designated number of applicants for consideration by the state selection committee. The number of applicant finalists is determined by the total enrollment for each diocese/jurisdiction. Each diocese/jurisdiction will assemble a selection committee to review the submitted applications.

Each diocese/jurisdiction will submit its finalists to the Wisconsin Council of Religious and Independent Schools (WCRIS) no later than December 14, 2009. WCRIS will submit the applications of finalists to the state selection committee, which will consist of representatives from the cooperative educational service agencies, WCRIS, Wisconsin Parents Association, Wisconsin Newspaper Association, Herb Kohl Educational Foundation, the community, and education-related associations. The committee will convene on February 2-3, 2010 to score applications. Applicants will be contacted in late February or early March, 2010.

Use of Scholarship Grant

A Kohl Excellence Scholarship can only be used to directly reimburse tuition, room and boards, books, technolog, and fees for post-secondary education. In August, 20010 the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation will make the $1000 scholarship grants directly to the postsecondary institutions that scholarship recipients attend.
